COACHING
Lately I have recently been working with extremely gifted, excellent award-winning vocalists, coaching them with finding global and national music fests, grant writing, writing, the press, self-publicity, music sync, radio, TV, guest podcasting/blogging and the North American music industry.
One of my talented Edmonton recording artist clients I was coaching and assisting with grant writing just received the news that she has won the major grant award we had been working on.
It is knowing that deserving artists are gaining the acknowledgement and funding that they deserve that brings me the most happy satisfaction. Additionally, our Canadian and US artists are very gifted and deserve to be supported.
Why? Music brings in major income on a global scale. Driven primarily by live events and tourism, Canada's music industry adds over $10.9 billion and 135,000 jobs to the national GDP every year. Recent data also highlights strong sector growth, with the recorded music market reaching $957.9 million and the rights management organization SOCAN bringing in an unprecedented $587 million, for example.
The music industry contributes $212 billion to the U.S. GDP annually and supports more than 2.5 million American jobs.
This is only one reason why music programs should not be cut from schools. Additionally from an innovation point of view and making Canada competitive, high school music students receive higher grades and improved intellect over their non-music-focused peers. Early music lessons prevent dementia later in life. Science and health magazines rave about this.
MUSIC IN SCHOOLS VS SPORTS (ILLOGICAL SPOCK MOMENT )
MUSIC BRINGS IN MORE INCOME THAN SPORTS IN CANADA BUT RECEIVES MORE CUTS
The Economic Impact of Canadian Sports
Canada's sports sector is anchored by community-level facilities, local recreation programs, and a deep-rooted winter sports culture, all complementing its major professional sports franchises. To measure this financial impact, Statistics Canada monitors the entire value chain through its official "Sport GDP" metrics.
Annual Sport GDP: The sports industry generates$7.56 billion CAD every year.
GDP Contribution: This economic output represents precisely 0.3% of Canada's overall gross domestic product.
Workforce Impact: More than 103,000 jobs nationwide are supported by the sports sector, with athletic education, coaching, and structured tournaments serving as primary employment drivers.
COACHING RESULTS
As you know, I have been a long-time JUNO Awards and DownBeat Critics Poll music judge, a 2025/26 MiMc Music Awards judge with Music in Motion Canada, and a past Polaris Music Prize judge (2018-2026). So, I have been coaching artists in JUNO Awards readiness and prep, music sync contacts, as well as sharing prospective BC, Canada, USA, and European Jazz and Music Fest lists and contact information. This includes contact and acquisition information for blogs, podcast guesting and how to access radio and music sync.
I also assist writers with book launches; the press, and new film directors with film festing and the press.
If you would like some assistance, I have some space right now to assist. I am working with several artists and have limited space.
As I had mentioned I have been drawing BIG lines in groups of five to create massive music score paper, because I find creating my own staff paper makes me feel much freer when I am not squinting to see the notes and struggling to fit and squeeze them on to the staff!
It was kind of comical, this is a joke for the musicians. I ran into a leger line mishap when sketching out violin harmonics while composing, noting the notes due to trying to remember what I was hearing due to repeatedly falling asleep (late at night), yes so I went to bed! Then a fun game with a violin extreme upper leger line harmonics range better suited to piano due to the range, and a leger line bass drone interfering with the scoring space yesterday! Leger line fiasco!!!!
From Pixabay by girlonphire.
So, I decided to make the leger line experiment a composed introduction for a jazz quintet tune, with the first introductory part for bass ONLY, of course with some ad lib and rubato as the bassist desires. So those imaginary violin harmonics are really going to drop down much lower.
I am hearing this as a very minimalist art-jazz piece with avant influences in tribute to my past mentor, American composer James Tenney. (August 10, 1934 – August 24, 2006). Jim (James) would have loved the art sketch book hand-drawn staff large staffed music scoring paper! You can see a sample above, and note the random pen marks that took place when I fell asleep several times! :)
Shape-note score created by monks. A moving gift from James Tenney.
Jim Tenney used to ask me to notate my scores with an ink well and a quill, a pen nib, in the old-fashioned ancient style. Occasionally, an over-dipped-in-the-inkwell dripping pen with a random falling ink drop mistake would destroy carefully notated work, requiring a score restart. This was during the pre-computer era. Computers were not yet in most households the way that they are now.
Tenney had wanted me to learn notation very thoroughly so I could always notate my ideas. I managed to hear his work performed at Musikinstitut Darmstadt, West Germany, where I met his friend, composer John Cage. ♥ Cage and Tenney used to commonly program a room that was full of equipment from floor to ceiling, a massive computer, requiring hand-fed cardboard slots with inventive methods used to produce musical indeterminacy.
When I told Toronto's Jim in the 80s that I was moving to BC, he gifted me a wonderful shape-note framed antique music page written by monks that I have hanging on my wall to this day. This was how music was written before note heads became circles.
Album Project
I am excited about continuing to compose for an upcoming jazz album project and honoring my heart and intuitive imagined inventions.
